Give
Yourself a Facial
Flaky, dry skin is a problem for many people during the winter. The
combination of cold outdoor weather and dry indoor air wreaks havoc
by breaking down the protective lipid barriers in skin and dehydrating
it.
A facial massage can help. Facial massage leaves skin looking smooth,
stimulates circulation, helps relieve sinus congestion, and even reduces
stress.
I tried this recipe from the book Naturally Healthy Skin last week when
I noticed my skin was starting to get a bit flaky. I used almond oil
as the base oil and found a calendula oil made by Gaia Herbs. I couldn't
find carrot oil at my local Whole Foods Market, so I bought the Burt's
Bees Carrot Seed Complexion Mist as a substitute for the carrot oil
(I'll keep the complexion mist to spritz on my face during the winter.)
The facial massage with this oil worked well--my skin looked and felt
softer and smoother after the treatment.
Carrot and Calendula Complexion Conditioner by Stephanie
Tourles
"This penetrating, gentle, skin nourishing oil can be used as a
moisturizing facial massage oil for all skin types except for very oily,
sunburned, and couperose skin.
If done on a regular basis, facial massage will increase circulation
and moisture retention - key during the harsh, dry winter months - resulting
in smooth, glowing skin."
Ingredients
2 tablespoons (30 ml) sesame, almond, hazelnut or jojoba oil
6 drops carrot seed essential oil
4 drops calendula essential oil
Make the Oil
Combine all ingredients in a 1-ounce (30 ml) dark glass bottle. Shake
thoroughly to blend. Store in a dry, dark cabinet. For maximum potency,
use within 1 year. Yield: 1 ounce (30 ml)
Facial Massage Instructions
1. One-half (2.5 ml) to one teaspoon (5 ml) of oil should be sufficient
for a 5 minute facial massage before bedtime.
2. Beginning at the base of your throat, use upward and outward strokes,
progressing with sliding movements along your jawline to the base of
your ears, then circular motions over your cheeks and ears and around
your lips.
3. Lightly tap around your eyes with the pads of your fingers, beginning
at the outer edge and working inward.
4. Next, beginning at the center of your forehead, use upward strokes
to work your way outward with each hand, ending with circular strokes
over your temples.
5. Repeat the entire procedure up to 5 times. No need to rinse as the
oil should be completely absorbed into your skin.
