More about seaweed baths:

Thalassatherapy (Seaweed-based therapy) has been popular for thousands of years. In ancient times the Greeks and Romans believed that seawater and seaweed were highly beneficial. It is known that they have curative and therapeutic properties, and that seawater is almost identical to body plasma, so soaking in warm seawater enables the body to absorb minerals and trace elements while at the same time eliminating toxins and impurities. The seaweed adds a wonderful extra dimension. Seaweed – responsible for 70% of oxygen in the atmosphere – is like concentrated seawater which stores all these minerals and trace elements as well as antibacterial agents such as iodine during its growth. It also contains natural oils which are released by the heat of the bathwater. These oils are absorbed into the skin, leaving it supple, rejuvenated and moisturized.

Studies have confirmed that seaweed bathing helps reduce stress and relieves certain skin conditions. It is also helpful for the symptoms of rheumatism and arthritis, in the treatment of some circulatory problems, and eases backache or aching muscles. Above all, the healing powers of the sea help restore the balance needed by the body to promote well being and vitality.

The arrival of seaweed baths to the northwest is not new; the practice has enjoyed a long and prestigious tradition in the Strandhill area. The new found popularity prompted a Mr. Benjamin Morrow, a keen businessman, to construct and operate a bathhouse in Strandhill, Co. Sligo at the turn of the 19th century. The seaweed baths became a definite success and the seven-room building at Strandhill with baths available for over ten dozen, was often found full to capacity. Unfortunately in 1966 disaster struck, the 'Big Storm' of that year causing irreparable damage to the building. Finally, in 1969 the bathhouse was deemed unsafe for human use, and under the management of Mr. George Parkes the doors were finally closed.
